Tekelec Extends Relationship with T-Mobile to The Netherlands

Tekelec (NASDAQ:TKLC), a leading developer of high-performance network applications for next-generation fixed, mobile and packet networks, today announced it has won a contract to upgrade the T-Mobile Netherlands signaling network. The contract is the second one T-Mobile has signed with Tekelec in fewer than six months and follows the successful roll-out of Tekelec's Sigtran--Internet protocol (IP)-based signaling system 7 (SS7) solution, running on the EAGLE(R) 5 Integrated Signaling System (ISS), at T-Mobile Germany earlier this year.

The T-Mobile Netherlands deployment, completed in June, introduces IP-based signaling into the network to ensure the smooth transition to an all-IP network.

"Tekelec won the contract as a result of its ability to address our core requirements efficiently and cost-effectively," said Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, technical director, T-Mobile. "We have selected Tekelec because of its workmanship and successful earlier implementation of this technology with other mobile operators in The Netherlands and abroad."

The deployment will optimize the use of T-Mobile Netherlands' existing network resources, enable the migration of subscribers to new technologies and provide additional security and screening functions, helping T-Mobile to combat fraud. The deployment also will support the smooth introduction of roaming services and will provide interoperability between networks with disparate technologies, in a seamless and cost-effective manner.

Introducing Sigtran (SS7oIP) into the signaling network is the "stepping stone" for migrating to session initiation protocol (SIP) signaling in an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture. The introduction of standards-based Sigtran, which is fully compatible with the existing SS7 signaling network, increases signaling capacity at a lower cost. The underlying IP infrastructure can be leveraged for the parallel evolution from SS7 to SIP--as SIP signaling is able to traverse over the same quality of service-enabled IP network.

"Tekelec technology is now deployed in four out of the five major operators based in the Netherlands, a testament to our commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality signaling solutions," said Wolrad Claudy, managing director for Tekelec's operations in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, Australia and India. "This roll-out places us at the heart of T-Mobile's signaling network and further enhances our international relationship."
