Swisscom Mobile Selects Sun Microsystems to Improve Quality of Customer Service for 1,145 Retail Stores
At the 3GSM World Conference, Sun Microsystems Inc. announced that Swiss telecommunications carrier Swisscom Mobile has selected Sun Microsystems to help reduce IT complexity and costs by streamlining access for 1,145 retail stores to the company's customer-oriented applications to better serve customers and help increase revenue.
The Sun Java Identity Management Suite, part of the revolutionary Sun Java Enterprise System of open-source, subscription-based infrastructure software, is helping Swisscom Mobile realize its goal of providing optimal, standardized customer care, maximizing the effectiveness of the existing distribution and retail channels to better engage customers and thus increase revenue from new voice and data services.
The easier connectivity allows service provisioning to be carried out directly at the point of sale, benefiting Swisscom Mobile's retail outlets as well as their customers. Since implementing the Sun Java Identity Management Suite, the retail outlets have decreased the cost of a sale, and reduced the training requirements of shop staff for each new service launch. Customer service levels have also increased and can be easily measured with a satisfaction indicator within the Swisscom Mobile shop. In addition, the Sun Java Identity Management Suite is helping ensure retail outlets will benefit from future improvements as new services and changes in the POS system will be updated and available to the retail outlets in real-time.
"Sun Java Identity Management Suite has added significant value to our retail channel while maintaining our investment in our existing POS systems. And because it is based on an open framework, we know our investment will be protected well into the future," said Mr. Christian Kattenbusch, project manager, Swisscom Mobile. "Additionally, we are meeting our goals of reducing our recurring operation costs and increasing our ongoing customer service levels."
Prior to implementing the Sun Java Identity Management Suite, retail outlets required permission from Swisscom Mobile before providing customers access to new services. To remedy this, Swisscom Mobile selected the Sun Java Identity Management Suite for its comprehensive user authentication and single sign-on platform that supported its existing POS systems. The solution also offered a certified, agent-less and well- designed standard adapter for its existing Siebel CRM solution--another critical deciding factor for Swisscom Mobile. Lastly, Swisscom Mobile selected Sun Java Identity Manager because it is built on an open Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition platform, which offers high performance and scalability as well as long-term investment protection.
"Telecom companies are facing many challenges to stay ahead of the game. Being able to provide the right services to the right customers at the right time, in a cost effective fashion, is one way of doing just that," said Darrell Jordan-Smith, vice president, Global Telecommunications, Sun Microsystems. "Telecom companies require the ability to empower their channels with the same abilities and access to customer data in a secured, managed fashion--a sweet spot of the functionality of Sun Java Identity Management Suite."
"The Sun Java Identity Management Suite has been carefully designed to give companies such as Swisscom Mobile a competitive edge in the marketplace," said Sara Gates, vice president, Identity Management, Sun Microsystems. "We have created a virtually seamless, yet highly secure, experience that can easily and affordably scale to meet Swisscom Mobile's growing needs. That allows Swisscom Mobile to focus its energy on what matters most--delivering consistently superior service to its customers."
