BellSouth Unveils High-Speed DSL Internet Service in Madison
BellSouth Georgia President Phil Jacobs announced at a press conference here that the company's high-speed digital subscriber line (DSL) service is now available to qualified consumer and small business customers in the Madison area.
This service offering, and the installation of the high-speed switching facilities needed to provide it, is the next step in the initiative announced in May of last year by BellSouth and Governor Roy Barnes to speed development of a broadband infrastructure throughout Georgia.
"This installation is another critical step in fulfilling our vision of providing customers throughout the state with access to high-speed leading edge services," said Jacobs. "The deployment of this broadband network is critical for several reasons.

"This installation is another critical step in fulfilling our vision of providing customers throughout the state with access to high-speed leading edge services," said Jacobs. "The deployment of this broadband network is critical for several reasons.
"
"Not only will it provide our many customers in this area of Georgia with access to high-speed Internet service, the benefits of this technology will also contribute to the economic development of the state, and will further our effort to link Georgia schools to one of the most advanced telecommunications networks in the entire country," Jacobs noted.
BellSouth has now installed high-speed ATM switches in the Albany, Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah local calling areas, providing each of Georgia's five calling areas with the switching capabilities required to provide high-speed services.
This multi-year initiative will eventually deliver broadband access to hundreds of thousands of Georgia residents in over 60 markets outside of the Atlanta metro area.
"The addition of broadband to our telecommunications network puts us on an equal playing field with other centers of high technology," said David Nunn, City Manager of Madison. "We now can actively market the Madison area to those companies seeking connectivity, quality of life, and a talented work force."
The company's retail service offering is BellSouth FastAccess DSL ervice and utilizes DSL technology. BellSouth FastAccess DSL service allows the user to download information at speeds up to 1.5 megabits per second. It is up to 50 times faster for accessing the Internet than average speeds delivered by 28.8k dial-up modems.
There may be instances in which customers who live in DSL-served areas may have telephone lines that don't currently support DSL technology. In those cases, BellSouth will notify those customers when BellSouth FastAccess Internet Service becomes available.
BellSouth FastAccess DSL service is available to residential customers for only $45.00 per month for unlimited monthly usage if they subscribe to the BellSouth Complete Choice or BellSouth Area Plus plan. When purchased separately, the service is $49.95 per month.
BellSouth FastAccess DSL service for Business is only $75.00 per month for unlimited monthly usage if customers also subscribe to the BellSouth Complete Choice for Business Plan. When purchased separately, the service is 79.95 per month.
BellSouth also offers its wholesale DSL service to other network service providers, including Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs), Interexchange Carriers (IXCs) and other large business customers.
The initiative is being funded by BellSouth's capital investment program and through tax incentives granted under provisions of the Business Expansion and Support Tax (BEST).
The Georgia General Assembly established this initiative to encourage capital investment and continued economic development in all parts of the state. Investment in the plan will be in the tens of millions of dollars annually.
