Cingular Deploys the Tekelec EAGLE 5 Signaling Application System

Tekelec, a developer of telecommunications products for next-generation fixed, mobile, and packet networks, announced that Cingular Wireless has deployed the Tekelec EAGLE® 5 Signaling Application System (SAS) and G-Flex home location register (HLR) manager solutions in the service provider's new signaling architecture. With its new "star architecture" deployed in five U.S. regions, the carrier has successfully simplified its signaling network by releasing 168 of the facilities required in its previously complex mesh network. The new signaling network is expected to provide Cingular with both significant savings and increased network capacity.

In addition to reducing port costs and number of network facilities, the high reliability of the EAGLE 5 SAS and G-Flex HLR solutions will support Cingular as it expands its footprint into new service areas.

Cingular's new star architecture enables a majority of its subscriber calls to originate and terminate within the same region. The capability ensures the cost-efficient routing of traffic and helps deliver cost savings because it alleviates long-haul/interconnection charges and reduces the number of links and HLRs required. In addition, the full redundancy and high reliability provided by Tekelec's G-Flex helps to ensure the subscriber's connection will not be lost in the event that there is a failure. Instead, the call is routed to another regional network with ample capacity - while transparent to the subscriber.

"We are delighted to collaborate with Cingular to build an unprecedented signaling network that is paving the way for flexible network migration and deployment of revenue-generating applications," said Fred Lax, Tekelec's president and CEO. "As leading mobile operators have discovered, Tekelec's solutions provide significant savings in capital expenses and greatly reduced network administration costs, while delivering high reliability with seven-nines performance."
