Vignette Powers University of Utah Web Experience

Vignette (NASDAQ: VIGN - News) today announced that the University of Utah is using Vignette’s Web Experience software to power its internal and external Web sites, from personalized student portals to collaborative platforms for brain research.

The University’s Web initiatives are the result of a strategy designed to move the school from numerous information silos to a dynamic and connected community. The Vignette Web Experience Platform enables the University’s faculty and administrative content contributors — who are focused on teaching, scholarship and service rather than mastering Web publishing technologies — to create, manage, and deliver massive amounts of content for the entire University community.

The content can be customized to address each of the University’s diverse stakeholders including students, parents, faculty, donors and state officials.

“We are creating an online community valuable to everyone, from a world-class neurosurgeon to an incoming freshman,” said Paula Millington, director of Media Solutions at the University of Utah. “Vignette and Avalon Consulting together provide us the tools to aggregate and serve campus-wide Web applications, content and digital assets in a way that more deeply connects everyone.”

Vignette, along with implementation partner, Avalon Consulting, LLC, is the driving force behind the following Web initiatives for the University:

My.Utah.edu provides students with their own custom site, which aggregates the information they need to be successful at the University. This secure gateway brings together content and services personalized for the student, such as UMail, Finances and My Courses, as well as social events. Content providers range from Income Accounting, which collects tuition, to the AMS student society, which provides weather forecasts. The Marriot Library uses Vignette to sustain multiple content-heavy sites while maintaining a consistent Web experience. Vignette combines the work of more than 80 librarians and staff to provide greater access to massive amounts of information and services, including research tools, online librarian chat and research guides by subject for specific majors.

The Brain Institute uses Vignette to connect more than two dozen academic disciplines in a pioneering effort to create a collaborative community and working environment for advancing brain research. The online community allows disciplines as diverse as genomic research, computer imaging, clinical psychology, physics and biochemistry to work together to develop a more thorough understanding of the human brain and its pathologies. The goal is to foster greater innovation by combining as many different perspectives as possible. Vignette performs the critical task of breaking through organizational barriers that typically impede progress in cross-disciplinary research, thus creating a powerful, virtual institution of people dedicated to collaboration, innovation and education.

“The University of Utah is a great example of the many ways an organization can use the Web to connect with their constituents on both a personal and professional level,” said Dave Dutch, senior vice president of products and marketing at Vignette. “Our Web solutions empower business users to manage and deliver any type of content, creating experiences that build brand awareness, drive loyalty and enable the sharing of ideas and information.”
